Lighting the fire for our youngest readers

Empowered families. Thriving students. A stronger city.

Reading proficiency by third-grade is the most important predictor of high school graduation and career access. But fewer than 15% of students in St. Louis hit this critical milestone.

Lit Kids Club is working to change that reality. We are supporting families to ensure their young readers have the skills and habits that will set them up to read and succeed.

In talking with dozens of parents, we heard a couple things loud and clear: 1) we want to support our kid’s reading at home 2) it’s either too hard to find meaningful activities for them to do or I’m overwhelmed with options and 3) with limited time, we want to make sure we’re doing the most impactful actions.

With that in mind, we built this toolkit. It’s vetted by excerpts but built for parents. It starts with an overview of the different “ingredients” to strong early reading and then offers concrete, engaging, research-backed practices that you can do with your kids — at home, on the drive to school, with your older kids while you make dinner.

Are you an educator planning parent workshops around these activities?
